I am participating in Lustgarten's Walk for Pancreatic Cancer Research to honor my maternal grandmother and my mother who both passed from this terrible disease before reaching the age of seventy. My maternal grandmother passed when I was three years old. When I was almost five months pregnant with my daughter I came home to my husband standing in my foyer. He took me in his arms and gave me the shattering news that my own mother had been diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Terminal. My mother chose treatment to meet her grandchildren, she chose treatment, selflessly, to give us all more time. She changed my life with this choice in ways that I wish I could tell her now. During this horrible time, I spent hours sitting with her and she showed me what unconditional love truly is. I will never forget her support for me during this time, her acceptance of who I was and what I was going through, and her incredible resilience to hang on to meet my daughter and my nephew. She lived for her three grandchildren, and she lives on in them. I will forever be changed by the loss of my mother, but I choose to fight, as she did, to transform pancreatic cancer into a curable disease.
